چکیده

This paper was motivated by a computational effort to model the aircraft wake vortex hazard near airports. Those flows can usually be approximated as a pair of two-dimensional, incompressible vortices interacting with an infinite solid wall. The present numerical model uses a vorticity–streamfunction formulation to simulate the two-dimensional problem. Since vorticity generation near the wall alters the evolution of the secondary and tertiary vortices directly, accurate modeling of the wall region is critical. A local relationship between vorticity and streamfunction for a wall boundary condition has been established from a new point of view, by specifying the streamfunction at the boundary grid lifted away from the solid wall. The new method has utilized Taylor series expansions near the wall boundary. Although the resulting expressions are only first order accurate, the critical importance of physical and mathematical consistency has been achieved. Numerical test cases are discussed in the paper. 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

EXISTENCE OF A STEADY FLOW WITH A BOUNDED VORTEX IN AN UNBOUNDED DOMAIN

We prove the existence of steady 2-dimensional flows, containing a bounded vortex, and approaching a uniform flow at infinity. The data prescribed is the rearrangement class of the vorticity field. The corresponding stream function satisfies a semilinear elliptic partial differential equation. The result is proved by maximizing the kinetic energy over all flows whose vorticity fields are rearra...

Direct Numerical Simulation of the Wake Flow Behind a Cylinder Using Random Vortex Method in Medium to High Reynolds Numbers

Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow behind a cylinder, wake flow, using the random vortex method for an incompressible fluid in two dimensions is presented. In the random vortex method, the primary variable is vorticity of the flow field. After generation on the cylinder wall, it is followed in two fractional time step in a Lagrangian system of coordinates, namely convection and diffu...

Implementation of D3Q19 Lattice Boltzmann Method with a Curved Wall Boundary Condition for Simulation of Practical Flow Problems

In this paper, implementation of an extended form of a no-slip wall boundary condition is presented for the three-dimensional (3-D) lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for solving the incompressible fluid flows with complex geometries. The boundary condition is based on the off-lattice scheme with a polynomial interpolation which is used to reconstruct the curved or irregular wall boundary on the ne...

Hybrid Vortex/magnet Methods for Flow over a Solid Boundary

Boundary conditions, in particular no-slip boundary conditions, are usually imposed in vor-tex methods through the creation of vorticity. In three dimensions, this is typically done by creating vortex \blobs" or \segments". However, with these computational elements, one compromises accuracy by losing the divergence-free nature of the vorticity eld. Furthermore, these methods preclude the use o...

Vorticity generation mechanisms and correct boundary conditions for transverse jet simulation

A three-dimensional vortex element method is developed to simulate the flow field of an incompressible transverse jet at high Reynolds number — in particular, to explore the response of large-scale vortical structures in the jet to actuation. Vorticity produced in the channel wall boundary layer interacts with the jet flow at the nozzle exit, producing both axial and azimuthal perturbations to ...
